Presentation on Wasteful School Construction
Does School Construction Never seem to end in your district.  Are
the buildings more elaborate than the home you can afford to live
in?  Many examples of construction kickbacks and deals have been
reported across the state.  Is there fraud, waste and abuse in your
district?

Where are
Citizen Watchdog
Groups in Texas?
Why you should become a Citizen Watchdog

In Texas, our local debt is staggering.  We know that there are millions of dollars
being wasted.  Won't you be part of the solution and not part of the status quo
problem?

Take a look at the following chart of Texas Debt (www.tbrb.com).  You may not
believe it but it is real.  We are living on credit cards and those who claim all this
spending is for the children, are not being truthful.  Spending above our means will
insure that our children will have to deal with the debt in the future.  And in the
meantime Texas Citizens are being taxed out of their homes.  There is never
enough for the insatiable government bureaucracy.

About Citizen Watch Local Organizations

Texas cities, counties, ISDs and other taxing entities have you in debt over $110
BILLION.  Texas only spends only about 50 cents on every dollar for classroom
instruction.
Ever wonder where all that money goes?  So did we!  We also know that
when teachers, parents and taxpayers try to get answers to questions they are often
intimidated, roadblocks to answers are often put up by the local bureaucracy, and largely the
people who pay are last ones to be considered “important” by the local bureaucracy.

We have heard from people across the state and they are fed up.  The school system is
wrought with fraud, waste and abuse, teachers are underpaid and yet we continue to hear
that there is just not enough money in the school finance system or other city and county
infrastructure.  We believe there is enough money but it is not allocated properly.
Only
approximately 50 cents on every dollar goes to classroom instruction
and we
believe that we should get
more education for our dollars before we put more dollars
into education.

We have identified groups in Texas who have organized, and in some cases have literally
overturned the school bureaucracy, stopped bond elections and made contributions to
modifying local budgets.  If citizens are every going to have a true voice in the education of
our children and how our money is spent in other areas of local government,  more of these
groups need to be formed.   Consequently, Americans for Prosperity decided to institute a
Citizen Watch Program which would draw on the knowledge of already established groups
to educate and train people to get involved and more importantly TO BE EFFECTIVE
advocates of fiscal responsibility at the local level and sound education for our children.

This approach is a win-win for everyone.  If the bureaucracy quits wasting taxpayer dollars,
then there will be more money for teachers who deserve it and fewer taxes for those who
have to pay for it.  There will be fewer bond elections and less wasteful spending in city and
county budgets.

We have found almost unbelievable fraud, waste and abuse of taxpayer dollars throughout
Texas.  To read some examples

has been found in construction costs.

As a member of the Citizen Watch Program you will get to know other people across the
state who can help you with budget analysis, public information requests, give you ideas and
help point you in the right direction.

You will part of a dynamic group of people setting a legislative agenda, visiting with
legislators and attending training workshops and much more.

You will have access to a viable network with an easy communication mechanism so people
can chat, share ideas etc.  AFP is setting up this exciting new feature currently and we
expect it to be available soon.

AFP can help you get organized, recruit fellow team members, build your own website and
put you in touch with your counterparts across the state.

These tools will give you an idea of how to organize and we welcome those of
you who plan to join AFP's citizen watchdog team using them.  However, please
do not use them in official organizing meetings for other efforts.  Thank you.
