ACTION ALERT

Did you know:
• That from 2000-2002, homeowners' tax bills go up 2 1/3 times faster than inflation
and population rates combined.
• That property tax levies across the state increased by 62 percent from 1996 to 2002;
or nearly five times faster than the rate of population growth or the cost of living.
• That property taxes in Dallas and Houston are growing 5 times faster than median
family income!
Texas taxpayers deserve long term property tax relief. To do so, truth in taxation must
accompany property tax cut legislation. Otherwise, legislators may give us a tax cut
but property evaluations at the local level will eat up that tax cut.
The Truth in Taxation legislation (HB 1006) by Rep. Carl Isett (R-Lubbock), changes two
key aspects of the current process which allows localities to eat up tax cuts given by the
legislature. First, for larger cities and counties, the publishing and public hearing
requirements would go into effect when the proposed tax rate exceeds a certain limit.
Second, if an overall revenue increase is above this limit, the bill calls for an automatic roll
back election in which voters can decide if the new revenue is justified.
What can I do?
First, HB 1006 was defeated last session but it is back in the Special Session! .
Call your state Senators NOW to tell them you support Truth in Taxation
